Louisville antique dealer shares history behind successful business

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- You could call Joe Ley a packrat, and he'd be alright with that.

He's been collecting things since right after he was born. "Being an orphan, I never really had any toys. I don't remember having a Christmas tree as a child, and I think I got carried away," Ley said.

He's turned that life into something that he began capitalizing on years ago. "This year will be 49 years in business," he explained.

Joe Ley Antiques in Nulu has become a must-see in Louisville. From locals to celebrities to out of towners, a lot people find the store which has everything from the unique to the strange and fascinating.

"It's cool, it's old stuff, it's stuff that's got character," customer Keith Bohne said.

People may think you've been to a big antique shop, but probably not one as big as Joe Ley's.

Every room is packed to the brim with just about anything one could think of, and just when it seems like there could not be anything new, there's another room or another floor.

The store contains four to five acres of items, covering four floors. "I said, well I'll never fill this thing up. I must've lied because it's definitely full," Ley said.

He's also selling a lot of it every day to the countless people that make their way through, and to restaurants that use the antiques as a theme. It's a far cry from the life he began.

When it comes to the future, Ley joked, "You never see an antique dealer retire. He just dies loading something too heavy on top of his station wagon."
