Serial killer gets guilty verdict in cold-case rape, murder

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) - Larry Lamont White, already convicted of killing two women in the summer of 1983, was found guilty Friday of raping and murdering a third woman just weeks before his other two victims.

Police say 22-year-old mother of five Pamela Armstrong was raped and murdered in an alley in west Louisville on June 4, 1983.

Armstrong's daughter Lavonne White, who is of no relation to the defendant, was five years old when she learned her mother was killed.

"Growing up without a mother is very, very difficult. You just kind of have a sense of not belonging to anyone, so that's hard," Lavonne White told WDRB.

Lavonne White, along with family members, were inside the courtroom Friday when the judge read the guilty verdict after the jury deliberated for more than two hours.

"I was really anxious and we really just didn't know what to do," she said. "I still can't describe it. I had such a clash of emotions. It was very difficult for me."

For Lavonne White, a guilty conviction means more than just closure.

"It means my mother is not somebody who's forgotten and, beyond that, it means he won't have the opportunity to do this to any other woman," she told WDRB.

Larry White already served his sentence for killing two other women that same summer.

Now, he's in prison for a 2006 conviction for being a felon and having a firearm.

Lavonne White is anxious to learn his sentencing.

"I hope for a sentence that will ensure that he will never be able to see the light of day outside of what the prison institution allows," she said.

When asked if she's hoping for the death penalty, Lavonne said, "Honestly, to me it doesn't matter if he gets the death penalty or not. My mother certainly got the death penalty and she hadn't harmed a single person."

The jury will return to the courtroom Monday to deliberate White's fate.
