LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Sewer and drainage bills are going up beginning Friday, after the board of the Metropolitan Sewer District approved a 5.5 percent rate increase at its meeting today.

For a typical household using 5,000 gallons of water per month, the sewer portion of the bill would rise from $36.90 to $38.92 per month; the drainage portion from $7.28 to $7.68, MSD spokesman Steve Tedder said.

Most customers are billed every two months, Tedder noted. MSD costs are labeled “sewer and drainage” charges on Louisville Water Co. bills, Tedder said.

The increase is slightly less than last year’s 5.8 percent increase.

Since 2006, MSD has raised rates annually as part of a consent decree with the federal government. The consent decree goes through 2024.
