Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Today marks 100 years since the start of World War I.

In 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia after Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.

Originally the U.S. took a stance of neutrality, but was unable to avoid war as hostilities with Germany intensified.

The US declared war against the nation in 1917, three years after the official start of the war. One year later the war ended.
