WKU football coach Jeff Brohm ready to kick off his first season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Big Red and the football Hilltoppers have a new coach to lead the team. Jeff Brohm & WKU open the season at home on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. CT against Bowling Green at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Ky.

Brohm comes from a football dynasty in Louisville. He was Kentucky Mr. Football in 1988 and Kentucky High School Player of the Decade for the 1980's.  Later inducted into the prestigious 2014 Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame and Trinity High School Hall of Fame.

He was also MVP at Louisville as quarterback in 1992 and 1993, capped by an 18-7 victory over Michigan State in the 1993 Liberty Bowl. Brohm's father Oscar and brothers Brian and Greg also played football at Louisville. And Greg Brohm is the current WKU Director of Football Operations.

The city of Louisville is well represented on WKU roster.

Among the notable returning stars from the Louisville area are former Pleasure Ridge Park receiver Taywan Taylor and former Central running back Anthony "Ace" Wales. Taylor ranked second among rookies and sixth overall with 24 receptions and 270 yards in 2013 for the Hilltoppers, making seven starts and seeing action with the first-team offense during the spring. Wales showed off his speed with limited touches behind Antonio Andrews and Leon Allen in 2013, including a career high 65 rushing yards on 11 carries in route to his first career touchdown vs. Morgan State.

Other players from the city on the roster include Daeshawn Bertram (Trinity), Joe Brown (Butler), Will Bush (Ballard), DeAndre Farris (Collins), Juwan Gardner (DuPont Manual), Shawn Lacey (Southern), Scott Leibert (Trinity), De'Vonta Moffitt (Doss), Matt Nord (DeSales), Nathan Roush (DeSales), Darmontre Warr (DuPont Manual), Masai Whyte (Collins) and Deon Yelder (Southern).

Brohm hosts a "WKU Football Louisville Kickoff Party" on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Buffalo Wild Wings in St. Matthews in the Shelbyville Road Plaza. The event will run from 7:00-9:00 p.m. ET.
