Kentucky college expands for the first time in over 100 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- For the first time in 135 years, Simmons College of Kentucky is expanding its campus.

A ribbon was cut at the old Sons of the American Revolution building on 4th Street in downtown Louisville.

The building will house the college's administration offices and a library.

The expansion is big news for the once, nearly bankrupt college.

Earlier this year, the school became the first college in the nation to regain national accreditation.

"[The expansion] increases our capacity to reach more students. Our school is growing exponentially, and with a growing school there's a need for additional space," said Kevin Cosby, President of Simmons College.

School leaders say they want to transition Simmons from a small Bible college to a liberal arts college with a Christian base.
