POV | We Can Fix the JCPS School Board. Really. (7/29/14)

Posted: Updated:
I hear more grumbling in this community about JCPS than just about anything else. The kids aren't getting an adequate education. Busing is a disaster. Well, this fall, four of the seven seats on the Jefferson County Board of Education will be up for election. You may get a chance to do something about it.

It's critical that we elect school board members who have the skills and experience to govern a $1.3 billion organization. Right now, most of JCPS board members are not financially literate. They're well meaning, but when asked to oversee a budget nearly twice the size of the entire Louisville city budget, some can't even read a balance sheet!

Individuals living in districts 1, 3, 5 and 6 have until August 12 to file for the fall school board elections. If no one new steps forward to challenge them by then, we'll be stuck with the same school board that sorely lacks the leadership we desperately need.

We're wasting the educational opportunities of a whole generation of kids who have no say in the matter. Superintendent Hargens is very capable but she needs help from a stronger board. If you have the leadership and financial skills to help, please step forward as a candidate for the JCPS school board before August 12.

Our kids deserve better. Someone like you maybe.

If you have additional thoughts, call and share them.

I'm Bill Lamb…and that's my Point of View.
