McConnell introduces legislation aimed at alleviating opiate addiction

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell introduced the Protecting our Infants Act Thursday, to address a problem plaguing not only Kentucky, but the whole nation.

"Prescription drug and heroin abuse have risen to epidemic levels in my home state of Kentucky,” Mitch McConnell said. “More Kentuckians now lose their lives to drug overdose, largely driven by painkillers, than to car crashes."

Kentucky's top lawmaker admits his bill, which aims to prevent and treat opiate addiction in mothers and babies, is no silver bullet. But he says it is a step in the right direction.

According to a report issued by the Office of Drug Control Policy there were just over 1,000 overdose deaths in Kentucky last year.

Jefferson County had the most overdose deaths of any county, with 191.
