LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- I-71 southbound was shut down at the Gene Snyder Freeway Friday afternoon after a fatal accident.

According Metrosafe dispatchers, the accident took place shortly before 4:30.

The incident involved two vehicles, a Nissan Sentra and a Chevy Equinox.

Witnesses told police the driver of the Nissan was in the right lane and attempted to cross both lanes of traffic towards the emergency U-turn lane.

"It's very unfortunate and at this point it's not clear as to exactly what her intentions were or why she made that move," said Carey Klain, LMPD Public Information Officer.

Not only were the southbound lanes backed up because of the accident, but I-71 northbound was backed up too for several miles all because police say drivers were looking at the scene wondering what was going on.

"When there's an accident that's not affecting your lanes of traffic you need to be paying attention to the roadway," said Officer Klain.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The Nissan was struck by the Equinox. Police say a female in her 60s was driving the Nissan and was pronounced dead on scene.

The male driver and female passenger of the SUV were taken to Norton Brownsboro hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

LMPD's traffic unit is investigating.
