LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man is behind bars after police say he abused a nine-month-old baby boy.

Police in Jasper, Indiana say a local hospital contacted them after the baby came in with a serious injury on Wednesday.

Troopers arrested 24-year-old Arvel Griffey, Jr. for the crime and have charged him with a felony count of battery.

According to Indiana State Police, Griffey's  girlfriend picked him up at the Dubois County Community Corrections Center where he was already an inmate.  He was allowed to leave on work release.  While transporting Griffey Jr. back to the jail, police say, the baby started crying and Griffey reached back and hit the child in his car seat.  Medical personnel at Memorial Hospital indicated that the boy had sustained an injury to his genitalia that consisted of bleeding and swelling.

Griffey is being held without bond at the Dubois County Jail.

There's no word on Griffey's relationship to the child and there is also no word on the child's condition.
