LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's back to school time for a lot of kids in our area and for some, a big giveaway helped make sure they're ready.

The Archdiocese of Louisville held its “Back to School Fair" at two locations – one in Smoketown at the Maloney Center and the other at the Catholic Enrichment Center on West Broadway.

The event has been going on for nine years and the Archdiocese expected more than 200 people to show up this year.

They hand out free backpacks to student and then fill them with donated supplies.

Everything from crayons and glue sticks for the little ones to folders, paper and pens for high school students.

"With so many families in our community suffering from so many financial restraints this is our way to assist in that endeavor and give back to our community," multicultural ministry special project coordinator Charmein Weathers said.

This is the first time the event has been held at the Archdiocese’s Maloney Center building near Shelby Park.

All items were donated by community organizations and local businesses.
