Sellersburg man fighting to regain mobility

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - He was paralyzed in a fall, but a southern Indiana man says he will do whatever it takes to walk again.

In fact, doctors say it's possible. The only problem is the money.

Terry Hensgen was paralyzed in 2013 after falling from his porch in Sellersburg. Doctors thought he's never walk again, some in fact believing he wouldn't make it to the hospital alive.

"You know, he's beat the odds and he's done more than they ever thought he'd be able to do," Terry's daughter Chelsey Hensgen said.

Now, Terry Hensgen wants to beat the odds again.

"I don't want to be in this chair," he said. "I feel so bad for everybody that's not as far along as I am. I know that it's given me a whole other point of view of everything."

Hensgen says doctors believe he can walk with the right amount of therapy: five days a week, three hours a day, at a cost of $3,000 per week.

If it takes a full year, the family would pay $156,000 out of pocket. Hensgen says Medicaid will not cover the full treatment.

"When his doctors and therapists say that he does have a chance to get back up on his feet and walk again, we just want them to give him that chance," Chelsey Hensgen said.

That's why his family, including Chelsey, is getting involved to help.

They held Terry's Second Chance fundraiser on Sunday at Buffalo Wild Wings in Clarksville. Ten percent of sales donated to the family fund.

Hensgen is hopeful not only to walk, but to get back to work ... and get off disability.

"I know I won't do what I did as a carpenter," Terry Hensgen said. "I know I probably won't ever be able to do that again. But I can do something."

"You know, after everything that he's been through, he hasn't given up at all," Chelsey Hensgen said. "He has more determination that anyone I've ever met. He's such an inspiration to everybody."
