LMPD assigns extra officers to Shelbyville road for PGA traffic outside Valhalla

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Outside gate four at Valhalla, there's a lot going on. That's why Metro Police have assigned more than 150 traffic officers per day to cover The PGA Championship this year.

Rick Robinson has a tough job this week.

“We'll park a lot of cars and hopefully get everybody in safely,” he says.

Robinson is parking cars in a lot on Shelbyville Road for the PGA Championship at Valhalla so he's counting on a little, or really a lot of help from Metro Police.

Metro Police started its special detail outside the PGA Championship at about five a.m. Monday.

"It is going pretty well,” Lt. Joe Seelye said. “The traffic is picking up through the day, as we expected it would."

With at least 50,000 people a day expected to attend the event, the rules are a little different on the stretch of Shelbyville Road outside Valhalla.

“This morning we wrote 15 citations," Lt. Seelye said.

Metro Police are working with the department of transportation, and one of the biggest changes involves the speed limit.

“Within that partnership,” Lt. Seelye explained, “we determined that slowing that speed limit down from 55 to 45 was the appropriate thing to do."

The frequent stops involve both vehicles and a surprisingly large amount of foot traffic.

"This is a high volume roadway and it's used by many people,” he added. “So we do have some residence walking on Shelbyville Road, though we do not recommend that at all."

Some of those walkers are coming from Rick Robinson's lot. That's why he's glad Metro Police are on the job this week.

“We'll have peace of mind that, for our people to get into the golf tournament safely," Robinson said.

“The extra detail for Metro Police will continue through the end of the tournament on Sunday.
