Homicide Support Group proves helpful for victim's families

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- LMPD's Homicide Unit recently launched a support group for families of murder victims to build a network of support.

Detective John Fogel is one himself.

"My father died when I was 6 and I'll be 51 in October and it's still unsolved till this day," Fogel told WDRB.

His goal with the group is to make families aware of the resources they have in Louisville and to introduce them to people who share in their heartache.

"The parties that came were glad and grateful they came because it showed them they are not alone," said Fogel.

The group hosted its first meeting recently and while Fogel said he didn't know what to expect, he said it was a success.

Families of 21 murder victims were there.

"The ones that didn't show did call me and said they're grateful for the effort and they do want to be included in future events," he said.

Cheryl Browning was one of them.

"It's a comfort in a way to know that someone else is feeling the same way you do," Browning told WDRB.

Browning's daughter Kristine Pierson was found dead this past January in an alley in Louisville's Portland neighborhood.

Her murder is still unsolved.

"She was my baby you know, and for somebody to put her down there in the middle of winter -- I don't understand the evil," she said.

Browning said she joined the homicide support group because although talking about her daughter's death is painful, it's also helpful to be around people who know the grief she's dealing with.

"It was heartbreak every time you heard their story because you've lived it in some sort, or some same fashion," Browning said.

She encourages others who have lost a loved one to murder -- to give the group a chance.

"You're going to cry but they did make me laugh too and it had been a while," said Browning.
