Bikes still allowed on Big Four Bridge, directors just want lanes open

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you like biking on the Big Four Bridge, don't worry because you still can.

Officials with the Waterfront Development Corporation say they did take off the signs for bikes that had been in place designating a set bike lane.

However, it's only because they want people to be able to walk and run in that space, and for bikes to cross over to the other lanes freely.

Deputy Director, Mike Kimmel says pets are the only thing still banned on the bridge and bikes are still encouraged.

“We like for the bicycles to be up there.” Deputy Director of the Waterfront Development Corporation Mike Kimmel said. “We like for them to ride across the bridge we just want everyone to be safe…because on days we have so many people up there it just doesn't make sense to dedicate a portion of the bridge to one particular use.”

Kimmel says over the next several months, there will be electricians on the Big Four working to install 1,500 LED light fixtures that will run the length of the bridge.

That project is expected to be finished by January.
