'Beat the Heat 5K' honors former PRP football player

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Max Gilpin died three days after collapsing during football practice at Pleasure Ridge Park High School in August 2008.

Today, people gathered to celebrate his life and bring awareness to heat-related illnesses.

It was the 2nd annual Max Gilpin "Beat the Heat 5K" at Iroquois Park in Louisville. Gilpin officially died of complications from heat stroke.

His mom says it's all about getting people to stay hydrated in extreme heat.

"It's been six years since Max died and my main thing is to try and keep his memory alive in turn to keep the awareness," Gilpin's mother Michele Crockett said. "The heat illness awareness on the forefront, you know that's the main goal."

The Max Gilpin Fund will donate some money to Kosair's Childrens Hospital.. to help pay for a a memorial for Max in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
