LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A 100,000-gallon water tower has collapsed in Shelby County today, dispatchers say, causing significant damage to Waddy Baptist Church and several other nearby buildings.

The incident occurred near Waddy Road in Waddy, Ky. around 5:30 p.m.

Officials say the tower also hit the Post Office and damaged two homes. Water could be seen running down the street next to siding and bricks.

All utilities to the affected buildings have been turned off and clean up will likely take days.

"The church has three-foot water in the basement, (and it) wiped out all the air conditioning units on this side," Waddy assistant fire chief James Riddle said. "The Sunday school building took most of the damage ... all the back of it is collapsed in."

Riddle says the water district is still trying to figure out how the tower collapsed. Building and electrical inspectors will be out first thing in the morning.
