LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man has been arrested after he was allegedly involved in a DUI crash that injured a Louisville Metro Police officer.

It happened Sunday afternoon, just after 3:30, at the corner of Bardstown Road and Douglass Boulevard.

Police say 41-year-old Christopher E. Helton was at fault when he was involved in the collision with the marked LMPD police vehicle. The officer was taken to Jewish Hospital Medical Center East after complaining of neck and back pain. The LMPD vehicle sustained significant rear-end damage as a result of the crash, according to the arrest report.

Helton's eyes were allegedly bloodshot and glassy, and police say he had slurred speech and smelled strongly of alcohol. He allegedly told officers that, just before the crash, he had been to Saints Bar & Pub in St. Matthews.

Helton was eventually arrested and charged with -- among other things -- criminal mischief, third degree assault of a police officer, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure of an owner to maintain required insurance.
