LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A New Albany woman was arrested by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Monday afternoon after police say she intentionally abandoned her mastiff puppy.

According to an arrest warrant, it happened in Jefferson County, Ky. on July 10. Police say 22-year-old Madeleine Cornish was in the process of moving when she intentionally abandoned her puppy, Benson, in a house for over three weeks.

Police say this caused "cruel neglect by failing to provide any food, water or vet care."

When Cornish returned to the house, she found Benson "severely emaciated and dehydrated."

"Benson had a body score of 1, which is the lowest and worst on the body condition score chart used by veterinarians," the arrest warrant states. "Benson's ribs, lumbar vertebrae, pelvic bones and all body prominences [were] evident from a distance with no discernible body fat."

Police say that instead of getting veterinary care for the dog, Cornish simply dropped Benson off somewhere on S. Ewing Street, near Frankfort Avenue. She allegedly did so to avoid prosecution.

A warrant for Cornish's arrest was issued on July 24. She was arrested Monday afternoon, and charged with second degree cruelty to animals -- a misdemeanor -- and tampering with physical evidence, a felony.

Last month, WDRB News brought you images of the dog, which was taken in by The Arrow Fund, an animal welfare group. At the time, The Arrow Fund gave the dog the name Hank and we're told the 5-month-old canine weighed less than 30 pounds, despite the fact that he was supposed to weigh 50.

"It's the most heinous crimes committed against them, whether it be abuse or neglect, and you would be surprised how they respond to love and care," said Rebecca Eaves, an official with the Arrow Fund, last month.
