Renting now a popular option for college text books

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The average bill for college text books per student is a whopping $1,200, but there are some ways to cut that cost.

One option is to buy used books. It's a standard practice for publishing companies to release new editions of textbooks every four years, but much of the same information is still in the slightly older editions. Most students will sell their textbooks once the semester is over, allowing re-use by others.

While used textbooks are cheaper, you will likely get only a small percentage of the price you paid when you sell your used book. That has led many students to turn to a new option - renting.

There's now a wide range of websites that let students rent their college text books rather than buy.
