BOZICH | Bobby Petrino Responds To Sports Illustrated Story

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Time for one more look at the Bobby Petrino-Todd Grantham story that Sports Illustrated stirred on Monday with its quotes from an anonymous source who said that Petrino and Grantham, his defensive coordinator, were not getting along.

This response was not from an anonymous source. It was on the record – from Petrino, Louisville's head coach.

Petrino challenged Grantham to a three-round, cage match (brass knuckles optional) at noon on game day against Miami, midfield of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

OK, I made up the part about the brass knuckles being optional.

Actually, I told Petrino that Grantham had already laughed off the SI story and asked for his reaction.

“Well, kind of like Todd, it's kind of laughable,” he said.

“I have the utmost respect for Todd. I think he's an expert at everything he does on defense. It's great having him here because of his intensity, his knowledge. For me being able to work on offense and him run the entire defense.

“Nothing could be further from the truth. We have a great relationship. We have the utmost respect for each other. We're having a really good time in camp. I see our players getting better and smarter on defense every day.”

Any idea how somebody could form that awful impression (and share it with a Sports Illustrated reporter)?

“I have no idea,” Petrino said. “None.”

That's it. Maybe Eric Crawford and I can go toe-to-toe in the cage instead. Petrino, Grantham and SI can referee.
