Airlines continue profitability streak

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Profit is soaring for airlines.

The top nine major U.S. passenger airlines -- Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Jetblue, Southwest, Spirit and United -- more than doubled net profit in the first half of 2014.

An industry groups says, collectively, the airlines earned $3.8 billion.

That's up over $1 billion more during the same time last year. Lower jet fuel prices and maintenance expenses helped the airlines contain costs.
