LANE | Cats Ready to Open Season Two Under Stoops

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The most surprising news I heard out of Lexington today was that Saturday's game at Commonwealth Stadium against UT Martin was UK's first opener at home since 2007.  What?  Yes and then I was reminded that the Wildcats had played in several neutral site games (two in Nashville and one in Cincinnati) plus games at Louisville since that 51-10 win over Eastern Kentucky to open the '07 campaign.

Saturday's opponent is also from the Ohio Valley Conference.  The Skyhawks were 7-5 a year ago, 5-3 in the OVC and they have a quarterback named Favre (Brett's nephew Dylan).  Mark Stoops says, coming off a two-win season, his group is in no position to overlook anybody.

"We've got to do everything necessary to play at a high level", said UK's head coach. "With any game plan, you got to take whatever you're going to emphasize that week and run with it on both sides of the ball. But we will try to play as best we can and do everything we can.  We can't take anything for granted, you know that.  It's just not where we're at.  The state of our program, we have to go out and play the very best we can each and every snap.  Whatever we have to do to play well on both sides of the ball, special teams, we'll do that."

The Cats are especially young on offense.  They will play four redshirt Freshman on the offensive line and four true Freshman at wide receiver.  And the guy running the offense is also quite inexperienced, Sophomore Patrick Towles, coming off a redshirt season.

"He has the keys," said Stoops about his QB.  "You heard me say that before.  He's going to go through some ups and downs.  That's anybody at any position. We never guarantee anything except an opportunity, so...  He's not on a short leash.  He won the job.  He is the starting quarterback."

The first meeting between the Wildcats and the Skyhawks kicks off at noon at the currently being renovated Commonwealth Stadium.
