LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Western Kentucky gets a jump on much of the college football world when Bowling Green comes to Bowling Green for a Friday night opener. It won't be an easy way to begin things under first-year head coach Jeff Brohm. The Falcons have a veteran group returning from a defense that led the Mid-American Conference in total defense a year ago and they run a dangerous hurry-up offense. BG is among the favorites to win the MAC.
"We have tried as hard as you can to simulate that speed," said Brohm. "Obviously, when you get in a game setting, you will see exactly where you are at. All through the spring, all through the summer and fall camp, we have had a lot of tempo periods to make sure we prepare for that on defense. It is really just a matter of getting lined up, getting the calls in, being able to execute before they snap the ball. What they are hoping for is four to eight plays a game, someone is uncovered, wide open and you are able to sneak an easy one in there. We can't allow that to happen."
The Toppers are making the move to Conference USA this season. Their conference opener is September 13th, in week three at Middle Tennessee. In fact their next three games after Friday are on the road, with the MTSU trip sandwiched between games at Illinois and at Navy.
"We have to be consistent," said WKU starting quarterback Brandon Doughty. "Everyone has to play their role and understand it's going to take 11 guys (to win the game). We have to stay consistent throughout the game and just keep pushing."
The first-year head coach is feeling the butterflies as game-day closes in.
“I think you always have a little bit of nerves. I definitely have those nerves right now," said the former Quarterback "You want your team to play well. You want all the hard work to payoff, you want them to see the results. Not until you get out there and get your feet wet do you see where you stand. The fact that we are playing a good opponent is great for us. We get to see where we stand right off the bat before we get into tough conference play. It's an exciting time. Definitely, myself and our players will have nerves but that is part of it. You continue to work hard, you continue to believe in what you've done and you relax and go out there and do the best you can.”
The Falcons of Bowling Green and the Hilltoppers kick off at 7:30 Eastern Friday at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
