UK receives $24 million grant to launch sustainable energy research

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- While coal still keeps the lights on in Kentucky, UK has launched an ambitious project designed to power a new energy economy.

The university has received $24 million, fueled by a federal grant, to begin research on sustainable energy sources in Kentucky, such as biofuels.

Kentucky has lost thousands of coal jobs over the past few years, but Gov. Steve Beshear says the project is not an acknowledgment that coal's future is bleak.

"It's an acknowledgment that we've got to have an all-of-the-above strategy and develop the techniques and the technology it takes to utilize coal to the fullest, but also utilize all other forms of energy at the same time," Beshear said.

The project also includes the University of Louisville, as well as the state's other public universities and community and technical colleges.
