Wiener King preps for tailgating season

PALMYRA, In. (WDRB) --There's nothing quite like the first football game of the season. Your team is back, and you have an excuse to tailgate with a cold one and a hot dog or brat.

"We hate to see the game start because that's the end of the party," Wiener King President, Scott Trowbridge said.

If you're one of those people, you might not realize those wieners you're grilling and eating are actually made right here in Kentuckiana. Wiener King, a Palmyra based business, churns out dog after dog and brat after brat. Wieners are kind of a Southern Indiana thing.

"The tradition here is rich. They go back a long way," he said.

As in back to 1900. A few different Southern Indiana businessmen owned the recipe until Scott Trowbridge bought it in 2000.

"I gave him a big check, and he gave me this little piece of paper that just had a real obscure formulation and it just had real simple directions," explained Trowbridge.

There was only one problem.

"I had no idea how to make a hot dog," he said.

Trowbridge sure has figured it out over time. He links, cooks, and perfects the process while also making different kinds of dogs wiener fans crave.

"We added the crushed red pepper and jalapenos to them and cheddar cheese," said Trowbridge.

It's lot of work from here at home to make sure that time you'll spend indulging before the game, is perfect.
