I'm Dave Mutchler, President of River City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 614, and I represent over 2,200 active and retired officers of the LMPD.
Councilwoman Attica Scott accuses my members of being the licensed killers of unarmed black teens. She accuses us of then assassinating the character of these black teens to justify the murders, and goes on to say that she is tired of paying police officers to kill black children.
Police officers are the target of many verbal assaults such as this from those we encounter in the course of our daily duties. We've become accustomed to it, and most times simply shrug it off. But we will not stand by while the councilwoman uses her position as an elected official to spread hate and lies to those she is supposed to represent.
Most citizens are aware that it is the behavior and actions of an individual that elicit a certain police response, not the color of that person's skin. The real culprit is the complete lack of personal responsibility for one's actions - actions that can lead to a use of force by police officers.
Ms. Scott's rhetoric is blatantly extreme and only hurts her cause. We can't have a conversation or dialogue with someone so extreme as to blanket all police officers with the title "murderer."
Because there are elected officials like Councilwoman Scott who would use their position to feed hateful bias and untruths to our citizenry, I will continue to speak up and defend the honor of the police officers that serve and protect our community every day.
