LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two men -- a father and his son -- have been charged with attempted murder after a shooting that took place in public in Shelbyville.

Chief Danny Goodwin of the Shelbyville Police Department said the arrests came shortly after the crime.

Goodwin said that officers were called shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Monday after a shooting took place on Martin Luther King Jr. Street, near the intersection of 7th Street and Midland Trail.

Police say 66-year-old John Morgan Dixie, Sr. and 43-year-old John Alexander Dixie, Jr. were standing in the street in front of a retaining wall when they got into an argument with the victim. That's when, police say, both men fired several shots at the victim, striking him once in the thigh.

Wounded, police say the victim ran down an alley, pursued by the Dixies. The man eventually collapsed in a nearby yard, and the suspects got into a vehicle and drove away.

Several witnesses were nearby when the shooting happened, according to arrest reports.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he was placed in intensive care. He is expected to have surgery in an effort to save his leg, which may have to be amputated.

The Dixies were arrested just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday. They are both charged with attempted murder.
