LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police officer Jennifer Knopf is accused of assaulting a suspect while working a shoplifting case. Police say officer Knopf kicked the suspect in the chest.

"We were notified that she had assaulted a suspect," said Sgt. Phil Russell, with LMPD.

Officer Knopf is being investigated by LMPD's public integrity unit. The alleged assault happened at the K-Mart on Poplar Level Road in June.

Sgt. Russell said, "And the public integrity unit determined ah, after reviewing the facts of the case, that she had indeed struck the victim with her foot."

According to a police report, a female shoplifting suspect was already on the ground with her hands behind her back when the assault happened.

"The victim was seated and in handcuffs and she basically kicked the subject, suspect in the chest and knocked her over," explained Russell.

This is the second time this week that a Metro Police officer has been charged with a crime.

"It is absolutely disappointing. Anytime an officer violates the public's trust just like we said earlier," said Russell.

Earlier this week, Officer Larry Wagner was charged with shoplifting from Cabelas in Old Brownsboro Crossing.

Russell said, "There's no justification for what she did." And says the department will not tolerate this kind of behavior from officers. "Although it is rare, it does happen and it is disturbing to anyone involved. Especially the police who work hard to build the trust with the community."

Meanwhile, Knopf is assigned to the 6th division, but is off the streets for now, according to Russell.

"Her police powers have been suspended, and she's on administrative duty pending the outcome of the entire investigation."

Right now, Officer Knopf is charged with official misconduct and harassment with physical contact.
