CycLouvia promotes a car-free environment in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - No cars were moving today along a section of West Broadway.

Only bikes and skateboards were allowed.

Today was CycLouvia, which shut down West Broadway between 9th and 26th streets.

It promotes a car-free environment, where people can bike, skate, dance and shop.

There were food trucks, bounce houses and a rock wall for kids and parents to enjoy.

This was the first time the event has happened outside of the Highlands and Crescent Hill areas.

"This is a wonderful part of town and not everybody knows about it," participant James Calleroz White said. "So to cut down the streets and have people coming through ... it's a great opportunity for people to know another side of Louisville."

Cyclouvia is modeled after a program in Colombia, where citizens have enjoyed weekly car-free streets for 30 years.
