Dare to Care receives 25,000-pound donation

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Twenty-five thousand pounds in protein products were donated to the Dare to Care Food Bank Tuesday.

Smithfield Foods and Kroger partnered to make the donation possible. It's part of Smithfield's Helping Hungry Homes program, which has provided food for 200 food banks across the country. The company produces pork products.

Dare to Care's executive director says the timing for today's donation couldn't be better.

"Summer in the food banking business is a busy time," said Brian Riendeau, the executive director. "The demand for food assistance is higher than any other time during the year. And, as we move into Fall, our supply of food available to folks in need is pretty low."

Dare to Care serves 13 counties in the metro area - providing food for thousands of individuals and families in need.
