LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than 80 people applied for the position, but in the end, a retired Australian Ballet dancer got the job.

A new artistic director is taking the Louisville Ballet Company in a new direction, as the curtain rises on the 62nd season this week.

At its very best ballet is supposed to look effortless and whimsical, even though in reality it's anything but.

“I think that ballet falls prey to the stereotype of being out of date, old fashioned and I think that's our fault as dancers a lot of the time,” new artistic director Robert Curran says.

It's the final days of in-studio rehearsals before the Louisville Ballet opens its new season with the classic fairytale, Giselle.

Curran comes to Louisville from Australia where he was a principal dancer with the Australian Ballet. He retired from the stage two years ago.

“When I heard that it had come available I started doing my research and this company is fantastic,” Curran says.

Curran has his work cut out for him in Louisville. When it comes to ballet, there's not much enthusiasm and low ticket sales.

He wants to get the city excited about dance by taking ballet out of the studio.

“We kind of always expect them to join us at Whitney Hall or at the Brown Theater. We also have to take the work to them,” Curran says. “Getting dancers and the art that they produce onto social media I think is something that's a very exciting opportunity that has yet to be exploited.”

Emily O'Dell/Dancer: 15:42:21 “He really wants to bring a human aspect to the acting,” dancer Emily O'Dell says, “so he's really kind of pushing us all to not just be fake ballerinas out there so really tell the story with our movement and our faces.”

When asked why people should spend their Saturday night seeing Giselle, Curran simply said, “I can guarantee you we will take you by surprise.”

Tickets are still available for Giselle here.
