Big Four Station makes huge progress, nears completion

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Major progress is taking place at Big Four Station, the park at the foot of the Big Four Bridge in Jeffersonville.

Construction on the green space has been non-stop since late June. Work picked up speed this week with the addition of a four piece light fixture that reaches more than 50 ft. in the air.

The four towers were erected Tuesday afternoon. The main tower reaches 54 ft. and stands in what will be a reflecting pool. The towers display markings that show water lines from the 1937 flood.

"The significance of the two shades of colored glass is the high water mark for the 1937 flood," said Project Manager Todd Waldrip. "If you look at the line from on top of the pedestrian bridge that identifies the high water mark."

The park will also include a water fountain that starts at the back of the towers and descends down nine steps to the reflecting pool at the base of the largest tower.

"People are not going to believe what they see here in about a month. At night time especially, when everything is lit up, it's going to be spectacular," said Mayor Mike Moore.

So spectacular, Jeffersonville continues to receive state and national praise. This week, the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns honored the city with a community achievement award for the downtown rejuvenation that's taking place as a result of the bridges project.

"When the state of Indiana says, 'Hey Jeffersonville, you're doing things right,' that's a great pat on the back," said Moore.

The park will also include a pavilion for farmer's markets and concerts, playground, and restrooms.

Moore said Big Four Station will open the first week in October.
