LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The group behind Angel's Envy small-batch bourbon is nearly finished renovating a vacant barrel-storage warehouse off 7th Street Road and is gearing up to build two more whiskey warehouses on the 10-acre site in Shively.

Meanwhile, construction of the long-planned urban distillery on Main Street across from Louisville Slugger Field could begin within “the next month or two,” said Kevin Curtis, operations manager for Louisville Distilling Co.

Despite a ceremonial ground breaking more than a year ago, construction has yet to start on the distillery, which is expected to be a major component the emerging bourbon tourism scene downtown.

“All I can tell you it is moving forward; we closed on the property (and) permitting is underway,” Curtis said in a brief phone interview Thursday.

Wes Henderson, the chief operating officer of Louisville Distilling Co.'s parent Angel Share Brands, was unavailable for an interview Thursday. An assistant said he's out of the country this week.

Henderson's late father, Lincoln, created Angel's Envy, which is finished port wine casks.

Angel's Envy will be distilled at the downtown site, then transported to Shively for aging. As many as 115,000 barrels could be stored at the property between the three warehouses, Curtis said.

The barrels will age for at least four years, according to a cover letter Louisville Distiling Co. affiliate Papillon Property Group submitted to Louisville Metro Planning and Design Services on Monday as part of an application to build the two warehouses.

Curtis said the goal is to break ground on the warehouses within the “next couple of months.”
