Hundreds of Kentucky volunteers sworn in to Americorps

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- President Obama and President Clinton helped swear in hundreds of Kentucky volunteers at the KFC Yum! Center on Friday.

They appeared from the White House through a live stream as part of a national ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the service program Americorps.

More than 400 new Kentucky members took the pledge today to help give back to their communities. Volunteer work includes tutoring, fighting homelessness, and helping victims of domestic violence.

President Clinton started Americorps in 1994.

"It's easy to look at government and look at all things that are broke," said Kentucky U.S. Representative John Yarmuth. "Believe me, I work there. It's easy. But Americorps is proof it doesn't have to be that way."

Today's pledge was part of a simultaneous nationwide swearing-in ceremony that took place in every state, at the same time.
