LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A dramatic rescue took place in Old Louisville Friday as onlookers jumped into action to save a woman from a burning apartment building. The fire started around 4 p.m. at a building at 1st and Oak streets.

Jonathan Foster and Corey Nutgrass were on their way home from work when they noticed two men throwing rocks frantically throwing rocks at this old Louisville home.

Sensing their panic, they did what not everyone would - they stopped.

Jonathan Foster “We did what we could to try and help,” Foster said.

“Ya know I'm glad I did it but I look bad at it, it was scary it was frightening,” Nutgrass added.

The building was on fire and a woman was trapped inside, but together the group of men worked to break through a window.

“She came out the front window,” Lt. Col. Jeff Botner explained. “They broke the window with a rock and then pulled her to the exterior.”

“She was burnt really bad,” Nutgrass said.

The woman pulled from the fire was transported to the hospital for burns and one of her rescuers was wheeled away on a stretcher, needing medical attention for cuts and smoke inhalation

Fire officials say the building, broken up into apartments, suffered some damage, but sprinklers inside managed to help.

“With injuries and all, like any investigation, it will take some time,” Lt. Col. Botner said of the investigation.

Though it is a mystery how the fire started, how the rescue unfolded is not.

“I'm just happy that there are people in this community that are willing to help, like the two gentleman that were here when we stopped in the car,” Foster said. “Ya know they were already making an effort to get this woman out.”
