Child hospitalized in Oldham County for HUS diagnosis

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - WDRB has confirmed that at least one child has been hospitalized with a confirmed case of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).

Dori Livy, Nurse Program Manager with the Oldham County Health Department, said that a small child was hospitalized on Sept. 8.

Livy told WDRB that HUS usually occurs following an E.coli infection, which affects the gastro-intestinal system. Symptoms of infection include stomach cramps and diarrhea. It usually takes an incubation period of around three to four days before symptoms fully emerge, according to Livy.

Officials have opened an illness investigation and are attempting to find out what the cause is behind the illness.
