New Albany ice cream shop closes for season; owner selling

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) – A New Albany icon is likely changing hands very soon.

Mom and Pop's Cone Corner opened up in 1985 on Graybrook Lane.

"As a kid, the big treat was when dad would take us to a place like this," said owner Bob Hornung. "The thing I always remembered was that people were happy, so I thought why not open one."

Hornung started the restaurant nearly 30 years ago. He says it's cash only and they'll make anything anybody wants.

"I usually get the strawberry sundae with chocolate soft serve ice cream," said one customer.

Hornung has satisfied taste buds ever since opening 29 years ago. His customers have dozens of flavor options from Bust Your Britches and 22 Skidoo, to Ickey Gooey and Bibbity Bobbity Boo.

Not only does the eatery have a lot of very unique ice cream options, but it's one of the only places where you can buy the original William Wesley burger.

“I was able to get the original sauce recipe and we had people flock here to get the William Wesley burgers," said Hornung.

But after nearly 30 years, Hornung says it's time for one last scoop. He's ready to say goodbye to the sandwiches and soft serve.

"It's just time for me to pass it on," he said.

Bob's final season of serving up memories ended on Sunday.

"Business happens in that cash register, but I'll tell you, the relationships that you build through the window, you just can't get that at box stores," he said.

That's what the 65-year-old history teacher will miss the most.

"It's emotional,” he said. “I think back to all the people who told me it couldn't be done. I think back to all the people who've come to this window, who've passed on. My daughter grew up in here, my mom and dad were an integral part of this business. It's extremely difficult."

Hornung is now talking with a buyer for the business and that should be finalized in a few weeks.

He's hopeful they'll keep the same atmosphere and continue to make people smile.
