LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A husband and wife are dead after an apparent murder-suicide Monday night.

Louisville Metro Police say 39-year-old Anthony Puryear shot and killed 37-year-old Shannon Puryear before taking his own life.

Police say the confrontation started Monday evening at a house Shannon had been living at since the two separated. Police say Anthony followed Shannon to the Poplar Level Rd. exit of I-264. Homicide lieutenant Todd Kessinger said that's where things escalated.

"At that point, something happened," said Kessinger. "She drove through the median, drove through the grass right there off Poplar Level and Watterson and she crashed into the business."

The car the woman was driving smashed into Franck's Body Shop on Lincoln Avenue. Police say the man then got out of the car, approached the window of the SUV, shot the woman and then shot himself.

"He pulled up behind her, and then he got out and that's when the fatal shots were fired," said Kessinger.

Anthony Puryear was pronounced dead at the scene; Shannon Puryear was taken to University Hospital where she died a short time later.

Family of the victims say the couple was going through a divorce, and had one daughter together. Shannon also has a teenage daughter from a previous marriage.

Police say Anthony Puryear was active duty military. His family says he was serving in the Army.

His record shows no history of domestic violence.
