Calif. woman makes history as first female head high school football coach in the state

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Football may be a man's game -- but don't tell that to Knengi Martin.

She is making California history as the first female head high school football coach in the state. Martin got the job when the first head coach stepped down three games into the season.

And she knows her stuff.

She's number 47 for the San Diego Surge, a team that played for the Women's Football Alliance title last year. She's been named MVP nine times, catching touchdowns, laying out opponents and quarterbacks.

But here she has a simple goal.

"I don't want to just go down in history as a woman who coached football," she said. "I want to inspire other people to do what they love."

Martin's high school players admit finding out she was their new coach took them by surprise, but they respect her.
