LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – 34-year-old Greg Sawyers died after being shot multiple times near Clay and Broadway in downtown Louisville in July 2013. Police have now arrested 27-year-old Orlando Gilmore and charged him with murder, after a 14-month investigation.

Even though Sawyers has his own lengthy criminal history including wanton endangerment, inciting a riot and cocaine possession, his death raised questions as to whether his murder may have been connected to his ties to Ricky Kelly.

Kelly is one of the most notorious accused killers in Louisville. He is a defendant in more than a half-dozen murder cases.

"We're unclear as to the exact motive as to why Gilmore decided to shoot and kill Mr. Sawyers,” said Todd Kessinger. “Mr. Sawyers was scheduled to testify in the Ricky Kelly case. We don't have anything that we can prove that that was the motive or that that has anything to do with the murder."

Court documents show Sawyers had provided police with information in two different murder cases that authorities say Kelly was linked to, including the murder of Lajuante Jackson in 2005.

Court records show Sawyers witnessed that murder, only to be gunned down in the same neighborhood eight years later.

Kelly was charged with at least nine murders dating back to 1996. Eight of those murder charges were dismissed in state court. Kelly is now on trial for the 2005 murder in federal court.

Lt. Todd Kessinger with LMPD's homicide unit says his detectives will continue to investigate the Sawyer case should any other witnesses come forward or any new evidence is found.

"We'll keep investigating it until it goes to trial but we're not looking for anybody else at this point," Kessinger said.
