LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police are investigating after a man was found dead in a septic tank Thursday evening.

Police say a man called 911 around 6 p.m. to report feet sticking out of the septic tank at his home on Potter Road in Fern Creek. We're told the victim had been doing routine maintenance on the septic system when he got stuck in an 18-inch pipe.

The Fern Creek Fire Department responded to the scene where the man was pronounced dead.

"He was not completely in the hole, his legs were sticking out," said Deputy Coroner Jack Arnold.

According to Arnold, the worker was performing a scheduled repair to the homeowner's septic system. The worker was trying to replace a fitting when he got stuck in an 18-inch-pipe. The homeowner was not hot home at the time.

"We don't know how long he had been there," Arnold said.

Jimmy McCauley lives near the home where the victim's body was found. He walked to his neighbor's house to see what was happening after hearing the emergency vehicles.

"Pretty traumatizing, pretty traumatizing. It's a bad situation and you just pray for the victim's family," McCauley said.

The victim has not yet been identified, but Arnold says he is a white man in his 50s. According to police he was a self-employed contractor.

Police do not suspect foul play.
