Oldham County Police collect unwanted prescription drugs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Oldham County Police spent the afternoon collecting items they say can easily become stolen and abused.

The event, along with the Drug Enforcement Agency, is part of the national "Drug Take Back Day Initiative."

The department usually holds two events a year, collecting everything from needles to pills and liquid medication.

Oldham County Police Chief Greg Smith says they took in more than 30 pounds of prescription drugs last year.

"That's a lot when you break that down into individual pills," Smith said. "That's a lot of pills.

"Our goal is to take as many as possible and people come all day long ... we'll be glad to take anything they can take in. Our goal is to get them off the street."

Chief Smith says the department collects prescription drugs year round.

People dropped off more than 102 pounds of unwanted medication last year.
