Louisville animal shelter gives away free animals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - It's a first for the Kentucky Humane Society: an event giving away free pets.

The lines were long outside the humane society in south Louisville today.

Adoption fees were waived as part of the "Empty the Shelter Drive."

That's a big savings - adult dogs normally are $155, and cats are $65.

The free event helps make room for new animals that are brought in.

Since July first, more than 2,000 cats and dogs have been dropped off at this location.

"More pets are being born," said Andrea Blair of the Kentucky Humane Society. "Also, more strays are getting loose ... more people are moving.  A lot of things are happening where really in the summer it really becomes a perfect storm for shelters across the nation. It's where every shelter sees intakes skyrocket in the summer months."
