More health providers asking patients to pay bills in advance

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Paying up front for medical procedures.

The next time you head to the hospital, be ready to pull out your check book or credit card.

More hospitals are asking patients to settle their bills in advance.

That's because more Americans are shouldering a greater portion of their healthcare bills, and medical centers don't want to get stuck with what patients can't pay.

Traditionally, neither patients nor providers knew the exact price of procedures until after the insurer processed the charges.

However, new technology is now allowing hospitals to determine the patient's responsibility before treatment.

Here's something all patients should know. For now, patients can still opt to wait until bills go through insurance to pay the balance.
