JCPS urges parents to sign up for alert system for emergency situations

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Anytime there's an emergency, Jefferson County Public Schools can notify parents though its alert system.

Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens says that system did go into effect on Tuesday, following the shooting at Fern Creek High School.

"Parents were notified by One Call," said Hargens.

According to a timeline provided by the district, it sent out a text alert at 2:07 p.m., which was about an hour after the shooting. A minute later, at 2:08 p.m., a phone call went out, followed by an email at 2:30.

The One Call alert system is district-wide and sends out emails and phone messages on everything from emergencies to school cancellations. Alerts can also be sent to specific groups like school clubs or sports teams.

"If their son or daughter's basketball game is canceled, they'll send out an email to the people who are on the team and let them know," said JCPS Spokesperson Ben Jackey.

"I was completely unaware about the text alerts until you mentioned it to me," a parent from Newburg Middle School told us.

That seems to be the case with others in the district, especially after what happened at Fern Creek.

Out of the more than 1,500 students at the high school, JCPS says only 277 people get text alerts. That means more than 80% of parents and guardians at Fern Creek alone are not signed up.

"Fern Creek is going to be making that push,” said Jackey, “this should be an example to show you how important signing up for that text alert can be and we feel like we'll have more families at Fern Creek and probably all across the district.”

"It's very important because if your child isn't with you, you're always worried,” said a parent. “So if someone is involved in a school shooting or any other violent act you want to know about that immediately."

To get proper alerts, make sure your information is updated with your email and phone number on the parent portal.

As for the text alerts, you have to text the word “alert” to 2-2-3-0-0 (standard message rates apply).
