LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- KentuckianaWorks has thousands of dollars for people who are unemployed or have been laid off want to go back to school to become welders, and companies like Santa Rosa Systems in Bullitt County are always in need of help.

Dean Terrell is president of Santa Rosa Systems in Bullitt County, a business that specializes in welding for conveyor belts and business is good.

"It's really the greatest that it has ever been, it's a really good time in our industry right now," Terrell said.

Business and the company are growing, but there is a downside.

"We have a hard time finding the employees, you know, welders who have any experience."

That's where KentuckianaWorks and its career center come into the picture.

"Our job is to ring the bell,” KentuckianaWorks' Michael Gritton said. “There are jobs that are growing, companies that are moving into our market."

Gritton is executive director of KentuckianaWorks, he says there are thousands of dollars in scholarship money for people who are laid off or newly unemployed and want to become welders.

“Welding is one of those skills where the training is relatively short term, less than six months, the jobs are in demand, we know there are companies that are growing in our market, both in Louisville and in Bullitt County," Gritton explained.

So if you are attracted to the bright lights of welding. “There's no question,” Terrell said. He feels confident you won't be unemployed for long.

"If they know how to weld, you know, if they've been educated and trained in that, I am certain they'll find a job."

Right now, there are several schools in the Kentuckiana area that offer welding classes.
