New rules take effect for hydrocodone

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- New rules for the most-prescribed painkiller in the nation are now in the nation.

Hydrocodone has changed from a Schedule III drug to a more restrictive Schedule II.

The change is intended to minimize the misuse of the drug for recreational purposes, while making sure patients with severe pain still have reasonable access to the dosage they need.

Some medical professionals anticipate the change being a problem.

"Those who abuse the drug, I think will still find a way to do that because they seem to be very clever," said pharmacist Roger Hillis. "Those who legitimately need the medication are going to have a lot harder time getting it and will have to go back to their doctor more often."

There's no word on how this change will affect the cost of the painkiller.

Medical professionals advise calling your doctor to ask what procedures they're going to have to go through because of the change and how often they will need to come see a doctor for a prescription.
