Four names added to Kentucky's Fallen Firefighter Memorial

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Four names were added to Kentucky's Fallen Firefighter Memorial Wednesday. The names are those of four men who died in the line of duty from Aug. 2013 to Aug. 2014.

Arlie "Pooh" Hill of Whitley City Fire Department, Charles Goff of McQuady Fire Department, Robert Webster of Glencoe Fire Department, and Jonathan French of Glendale Fire Department, were added to the wall in Frankfort, Kentucky.

"If we could come back and never put another name on it, and just have a memorial service, that would be everyone's dream," said Ronnie Day of the Governor's Fire Commission. "Unfortunately, we all know that's not going to happen."

Day said across the nation, there is an average of 115 firefighter deaths per year. He said the average in Kentucky is about two. The four names added Wednesday were the first names to be added in three years.

The youngest of the firefighters honored was Jonathan French. French was responding to a van fire on I-65 Aug. 6, when he was hit and killed by a semi.

Glendale Fire Chief and French's uncle, Richard Peters, was one of the five firefighters who responded to the van fire. He said the realization that there could have been more names added to the memorial is chilling.

"There was five of us out there that morning, and there could have been five names from Glendale on there instead of just one," he said.

French's mother, Lisa, was also injured in the crash. After attending her son's funeral in a stretcher back in August, she carefully walked up to the memorial to see her son's name etched in stone. Peter's called her recovery "a blessing."

The name of Campbellsville Fire Captain Tony Grider was not added to the memorial Wednesday, because his death was not within the time frame used by organizers. His name will be added in 2015.
