LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- JCPS has changed its mind about transforming and moving one of its elementary schools as part of its Schools of Innovation plans. J.B. Atkinson Elementary in Portland is the new candidate for the Louisville Reach Academy, replacing the originally-proposed Klondike Elementary school.

The school board will discuss -- but not vote on the idea -- Monday afternoon.

For the last three months, the plan was to turn Klondike Elementary School in Hikes Point into a kindergarten-through-eighth grade school, starting next year. Students would've been moved to a nearby middle school building and been offered remedial and enrichment classes during a longer school day.

However, school board members and others say they believe Atkinson is more deserving of the switch, because it has lower test scores and students would not have to move.

Meetings with Atkinson staff and parents are to start Monday and continue through October 24th.

The school board could vote on the Atkinson proposal October 27th.

Also on Monday, the school board is scheduled to vote on the transformation of Maupin Elementary into a school based on the arts and humanities.

The board will hear further ideas on a museum school magnet program, scaled down from an earlier proposal.

Information on shifting the Louisville Reach Academy to J.B. Atkinson Elementary is found in documents prepared for a work session and formal vote by the Jefferson County School board Monday night.

Materials in the work session queue include a PowerPoint presentation on Schools of Innovation.
